what’s with the random homophobia that gets added to dramas recently???? strong woman do bong soon was a let down because of that and now this unnecessary scene??? i was enjoying myself so far and now this….

    • malee says:

      guess you are not asian.
its a thing here( its not that much the modern generation thou)
people make fun of them for being different. even punish them. I hope people change. its cruel to tell someone to be someone they are not and to tell them that their love is not “right”.
im straight but I support the LGBT community.
I wish that everyone is free to love who they really like.

      • Tracy Smith says:

Let’s not act as if US is better !!!They just allowed a homophobe not to sell cake to a gay couple . I agree that certain areas in america like San Fransico are gay friendly but don’t be mistaken esp. republicans HATE gays and they do get beaten up and bullied in this area. It is just an illusion to believe america is liberal everywhere it is mostly only in LA NEW YORK Las Vegas and Florida the other areas are not as liberal as you think . There are even bootcamps for parents who want their kids get out of their gayness and therapies etc to make them straight again . Just because the Media plays nice doesn’t mean all americans want gays around them . there is still a lot of hate depending where you come from .

        • malee says:

          really??
I thought America was the only country with an open mind. I though majority of Americans just dont have these stupid convectional ideas. geez. just today in the morning I was thinking about this. I was soo mad because we young people are expected to live inside a box in Asia. we cant spread our limbs and live freely. I determined that when I grow up I would move to the state, well now it seems that I should just move to the moon.

          • kogamo says:

From an outsider’s perspective America has liberal coasts and everything in the middle is extra conservative. I’d say non-catholic parts of western Europe are the most open minded about LGBT rights.

          • Tracy Smith says:

I did not say that all americans are the same there are a ton of liberal open minded ppl but the Illusion that they are more liberal than other countries is wrong. Women rights !!??? look at Hollywood and tell me how women were protected there. Many were abused for centuries and nobody helped because it was male dominated. I am half american so I am attacking my own roots but I am sick of this illusion . In the end every country has human angels who help others and evil monsters who destroy others no one is above anyone . Discrimination happens everywhere . Instead comparing countries etc we need to get ride of the monsters in every country . We need to create one peaceful world where it doesn’t matter where you come from and you are safe everywhere . We shouldn’t fight nations we should only fight ego power hungry greedy monsters who are destroying our planet with their greed and this has nothing to do with where you come from

        • xixter says:

They’re also killed in the US for being gay.

        • paradox.of.fate says:

Really? The US isn’t any better? Come on now… I have lived and traveled east coast to west coast north to south and almost everywhere in between. It’s a big difference from the percentage of acceptance here than in Korea. For you to say only LA, NY, and Vegas is laughable. I was working in a gay restaurant in 1980 in middle america, Indiana. Same state the VP is from, hard to believe right? You can’t classify based only on location or voting polls. As someone already mentioned it’s fear based period!
Most fears are developed through religion, so if I was to blame anything it would be that. All countries have polar opposites. Where there is love, there is hate and so on. I can tell you that even in the state I currently live, which is a very strong baptist faith, there happens to be some of the largest universities that are openly accepting of the LGBT community and personally I have too many friends to count that are apart of that.
Please let’s not bash, none of us liked what happened in the drama, why would we create even more hostilities towards this issue?
          Sorry for the rant…

        • paradox.of.fate says:

Sorry for the previous rant, maybe I should have just stated that your comment was not based on facts or experience, and comes off very ignorant? I can tell ya I drove home and saw 5 houses with the rainbow flags in their yard, how many did you see in a 30 min drive? How many do you think are in Korea? Your comment was ridiculous…

          • Tracy Smith says:

I worked in a Korean gay bar and yes it is still a tabu topic and less accepted than in the western world but I also worked in a gay bar in SF and most of my friends had bad stories and experienced mobbing , abuse, beating , discrimination. I didn’t all Americans hate gays. I made the point let’s not pretend as if Americans have no problems with gays . The acceptances grows but there are very conservative people esp. men with fears. who will attack gays in America. Women are more liberal and understanding but also American mothers want grandchildren and therefore have a hard time in the beginning to hear their child is gay. I’m not saying everyone but at least over 50 % are not ok with it . The strenges thing in Asia is that yes they have homophobia but somehow the guys are more open to touching you see soldiers sitting on each others laps , they cry they hug each other . Japanese even promote it I forgot how they call it but male idols kiss each other and act almost as couples it is accepted as a fantasie for girls so they don’t get jealous seeing them with other girls . it goes further than this whole shipping thing you see in Kpop . So yeah on one hand they have trouble with gays on the other hand they promote it even more than westerners . the whole touching and holding hands as men isn’t as weird in Asia as two men doing the same in America .you are not automaticlly gay in Asia because you hold your best friends hand . So this openness confuses me because they are more open about it in this regard but still have trouble with the actual coming out. japan has a very long tradition of warriors being away from home being intimate with other warriors without discriminating it then . its more tabu now than 600 years ago

          • paradox.of.fate says:

            So true.

          • Tracy Smith says:

I possible should have added the stories my gay American friends told me . All I wanted to pointed out is to make it clear that Westerns are not all liberals and there is a higher % maybe around 70% which is not as ok with gays as people want it to be. One friends was beaten up by his dad he was covered with bruised, one was kicked out of home , another got a visit by a priest to get the evil spirt out of him , another was sent to a bootcamp were he had to sing songs about how to love a woman . I didn’t say there is no acceptance and there are no official numbers but it will be below 50 %

          • paradox.of.fate says:

Again, it depends on where you live and there are at least many more support groups available to those going through that process. May not have been something the parents allowed, but even the schools are trained to support them. (Two of my sisters are counselors). Sad to hear that it didn’t work for them.

          • Tracy Smith says:

I felt angry that people pretend as Korean were worst when it comes to homophobia when almost all my American gay friends got attacked for it in one for or another even when their family was ok with it they still got called names on the street or attacked .so let’s not pretend as if America is above Korea

          • paradox.of.fate says:

Not claiming to be above Korea, just accepted by more in terms of ratio. But at least most don’t have to hide the fact and can even pursue a relationship openly which was my point.
Sorry your friends were attacked, verbally or physically. Several of mine have been too. But if you consider, 2 of my children were bullied when they younger just because they weren’t from this area, the discrimination unfortunately continues. I understand your anger, the guy I worked for at the restaurant was my brothers (who was straight) best friend who ended up dying from aids. Because of the fear during that time (aids was still very taboo) many of their high school friends didn’t show up for the funeral. I’m still angry about the lack of respect then and now.
I will try better to not come off so emotional if there is a next time. We both were battling the same cause.

          • Tracy Smith says:

:-) I don’t think that racism , homophobia etc. will disappear completely .But you can tell that the younger generation has less and less problems with any kind of differences. As long you are fun and kind it doesn’t matter who you are or who you love . It is a tabu topic in Korea but I don’t hear a lot about hate violence against gays here , it does happens like everywhere else but normally as long you don’t go around put it in peoples face most Koreans ignore it . There is always space for improvement but all I wanted to point out is that they are on a good way . Let’s focus on step by step improvements :-)

          • paradox.of.fate says:

At least I can be proud of the way I was raised even though Catholic, my parents pulled away due to the pressure to maintain the norm. They actually started and built another more liberal version of a catholic church which welcomed everyone, no judgements. Back then it was a pretty big deal. They even started a family camp called “Sonman” which was represented to be the opposite of Manson (Serial murderer) that promoted love, compassion and caring for all. Blessed to have the chance to grow up in such a loving atmosphere. Count my blessing daily…

          • Tracy Smith says:

the main goal of religion was to love one another . the Intention was to have rules how to live together in a community its what humans made out of it which made it dangerous . Esp when people claimed their religion is the only real , true one . We should work in communities we can’t change the neighborhood, city, state, country, world alone . But we need more of communities which understand that in the end we are all one sharing one earth so we need to find a way to get along even with differences . differences are not a bad thing it is the fear of them what cause problems . people feel safe with what they know and grew up with so every change, different opinion scares people and they want to protect what they know . I hope we find a way to focus on what is good . ” be the change you want to see in others” Ghandi.

          • Tracy Smith says:

Nobody is perfect . I hope one day we can overcome this whole one perspective aka my perspective is right . we should be able to share different views and points and then work on the common ground . I think its still a long way because yes there is a lot of hate out there and we will react to it an try to fight it with reactions we don’t want . It is difficult for me to understand why few ppl are soooooo close minded and don’t want to even take a look at different opinions , views, lifestyles and inside their way /path is the right path. But I have hope that it will improve and becomes less and less in the future.

          • paradox.of.fate says:

            Mutual hope.

          • DyingtobeinKorea says:

@paradoxoffate:disqus HUGS all around!!!! I say that with sincerity !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

          • paradox.of.fate says:

            <3<3<3 and kisses too! lol

          • paradox.of.fate says:

I really should apologize to you, the generalization is was angered me. Felt like it is exactly what those that show no respect do to others. Grouping people and making broad statements is something I work very hard not to do in my life. The only thing I give out is my experience. Everybody has their own, which makes it far more acceptable because it’s yours, no one can argue the point because it’s unique to you.
So if you see me making generalized comments without adding “in my experience” please keep me honest. ;)

      • dooooop says:

thanks for the reply. It’s not that I don’t know how the situation for the LGBTQI+ community in South Korea is (having several Korean friends who belong to the community) it’s just this fine line that recent dramas keep getting wrong?! I know that the society in South Korea overall is more conservative but there have been movies/dramas that featured LGTBQI+ characters before, especially the early 2000s that were far more progressive. Heck, there are great Indie series that prominently feature gay characters and issues that have been made recently. Reply 1997 did a better job than this.

Recent dramas just give me this feeling that a gay issue is added mostly for comedic effect and they take this attitude of “look how progressive this show is, we are even aware that queer characters exist”while missing the point.

I don’t mind that shows feature homophobia or misinformed characters but what I mean with riding a fine line is when those homophobic moments/characters don’t contribute to the story and are just there for comedic purpose.

It was totally legit to have his mom be a conservative person who’s worried her son might be gay. Her age doesn’t excuse her prejudice but it seems like a fairly realistic portrayal.

My problem is the nuance in secretary kim’s reaction and how the scene played out. The whole “g-g-g-g-ay” moment has this huge build up. They don’t leave at the mom having problems to say the word out loud (which I’d let pass as it fits the character) but the editing is done so dramatically that it feels like the producers/director is adding judgement to the scene. Dramatic build up, close up, finally she’s about to utter the word, then secretary Kim cuts in with a “gay?” only to calm her down with a “what? your son’s not gay, nothing to be worried about”-attitude. And this is where they imo finally messed up the scene. Having his mom be conservative?…fine. The show adding it’s own judgment with the editing? why would you do that. having the other character in the scene treat homosexuality like something you have to be worried about? unnecessary.

I don’t expect her to lecture the mom or explain why him maybe being gay isn’t a problem. They could just have changed her reaction by a nuance. Just have her say as neutral as possible “He’s not gay as far as I know and I know him well”. Let the viewer feel that it wouldn’t be a problem were he gay, aside from maybe his mother.

And that’s what annoys me. There was no need for this scene at all. And if you want to add it do better and not let the viewer feel that not only the character but the show itself and its writers and producers etc are handing down judgment on gay men.

Sorry, this got really long but this made be angry because it was an unnecessary mess and I know that they could’ve done better. There’s already good LGBTQI+ content in South Korea, even (although seldom) in the mainstream media.

(dunno why this got flagged as spam before…)

    • xixter says:

Not sure why they would want to promote homophobia either. It’s fear-based. It’s not like a traditional/conservative value, it’s control and eradication. Homophobes would be shocked to know how many of their beloved actors are gay but denial seems to work well for them.

    • ThenAgain... says:

I’m not loving all the homophobia lately either but at the same time I didn’t necessarily take what that mom said as necessarily an anti-gay comment…more like it was concern for son and what that would mean for him. Especially if you look at it through their cultural perspective and not ours. as @male pointed out many asian cultures have a very different mindset. I’m american and I know we are very individualist culture- but most asian countries are collectivist minded. They behave in ways that are
conducive to the community and family, rather than thinking about their individual needs. Koreans consider it to be honorable to sacrifice or suppress their individual desires in order to please that community- (If you’ve watch a lot of k-drama you notice that’s a super common trope- aka the Noble Idiot ). For them, fitting in is the most important thing. Being different isn’t acceptable. So, to that mom, her son being gay would be very hard to deal with – he might be ostracized from society, he might lose his job if he came out, or he might choose to live a life of isolation instead – never really being able to love openly or freely.. I know South korea is slowly becoming open to being more accepting of the LGBT community -but it’s still a very conformist/collectivist culture. It would be scary as a parent to have worry about your child navigating all that negativity.

      • dooooop says:

thanks for the reply. my problem actually wasn’t the mom’s reaction. in a more conservative society like south korea it seems fairly accurate to have her act that way.

my problem was that the show gave me the feeling that it was adding it’s own judgment to the scene. this scene was edited in a way that clearly it was meant as a joke with gay men being the butt of it. which imo was totally unnecessary because I know they could’ve handled that better. (I wrote a longer reply to @male@disqus_oJQ79eQkF3:disqus if you’re interested ^^)

        damn right dude.
like its really hard to change the concrete mindset of some asians. my mom recently showed me a dude who was wearing makeup and was making fun of him with me. I wanted to tell how wrong it was and how its ok to be different , but my words would be invain. im straight but if I told my parents that im not they will basically collapse! (im serious). im an INFJ so im pretty different (I dont like to have friends and socialize at times and I select my words very carefully so im quiet around strangers) then my mother would scold that im too “anti-social” and “weird” and…..the list is endless. when my teacher asked what topic we should select to hold a debate, I told that we should totally debate on the rights of LGBT people, then the whole class laughed at me and the teacher said” what.. what is wrong with you, behave yourself!!” after starting at me for 5 minutes. and of course the whole class suspected that I was not straight.

btw talking about gender issues I realized my username is @disqus_oJQ79eQkF3:disqus lol im not a male, its just that my name is maleesha
